GROWING UP A CONGREGATION.
Matthew 13: 18 – 23
18 Hear ye therefore the parable of the sower.
19 When any one heareth the word of the kingdom, and understandeth it not, then cometh the wicked one, and catcheth away that which was sown in his heart. This is he which received seed by the way side.
20 But he that received the seed into stony places, the same is he that heareth the word, and anon with joy receiveth it;
21 Yet hath he not root in himself, but dureth for a while: for when tribulation or persecution ariseth because of the word, by and by he is offended.
22 He also that received seed among the thorns is he that heareth the word; and the care of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, choke the word, and he becometh unfruitful.
23 But he that received seed into the good ground is he that heareth the word, and understandeth it; which also beareth fruit, and bringeth forth, some an hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty.
We need to be in the kingdom, the church, and we need to be good ground, growing in Faith, Love, and Commitment to God. We hear, understand and bring forth fruit.
Our growth in the church is dependant up on us first. The growth of the church here in Bartow is dependant upon us as christians. How can we grow?
I. 2 Cor. 5: 7 Develop a Greater Faith.
We must learn to walk by faith.
7 (For we walk by faith, not by sight:)
This doesn’t happen it must be developed, learned, nurtured. It takes time.
A. Heb. 11: 4 – 8 We must begin with faith in God. The heroes of faith.
4 By faith Abel offered unto God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, by which he obtained witness that he was righteous, God testifying of his gifts: and by it he being dead yet speaketh. By faith Enoch was translated that he should not see death; and was not found, because God had translated him: for before his translation he had this testimony, that he pleased God.
But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him. By faith Noah, being warned of God of things not seen as yet, moved with fear, prepared an ark to the saving of his house; by the which he condemned the world, and became heir of the righteousness which is by faith. {moved...: or, being wary}
8 By faith Abraham, when he was called to go out into a place which he should after receive for an inheritance, obeyed; and he went out, not knowing whither he went.
Growing in faith, a stronger faith, an enduring faith.
B. Heb. 10: 22 - 23 To walk by faith we must trust God.
22 Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water.
23 Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering; (for he is faithful that promised;)
Draw near, with a true heart, hold fast, without wavering.
Do not think God and Christ are unfaithful.
1. John 8: 24 We must believe he is Christ.
24 I said therefore unto you, that ye shall die in your sins: for if ye believe not that I am he, ye shall die in your sins.
2. Rom. 5: 1 – 2 We must trust Jesus.
1 Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ:
2 By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.
C. Phil. 4: 13 Paul believed there was none other than Christ.
13 I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.
1. 2 Tim. 1: 12 - 13 Paul had no doubt in Christ.
12 For the which cause I also suffer these things: nevertheless I am not ashamed: for I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day.
13 Hold fast the form of sound words, which thou hast heard of me, in faith and love which is in Christ Jesus.
2. Gal. 2: 20 Paul lived for Christ.
20 I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.
D. Eph. 1: 15 - 16 The faith of other Christians will strengthen us.
15 Wherefore I also, after I heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus, and love unto all the saints,
16 Cease not to give thanks for you, making mention of you in my prayers;
We must believe in our brothers faith that we can and will work together for the Lord’s church.
1. Eph. 4: 15 Speaking the truth in love.
15 But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ:
We must not only speak the truth, but in love.
2. Eph. 4: 16 the effectual working of every part, increasing, edifying in love.
16 From whom the whole body fitly joined together and compacted by that which every joint supplieth, according to the effectual working in the measure of every part, maketh increase of the body unto the edifying of itself in love.
Many members fitly joined together, every joint supplieth,
Making increase, edifying itself in love. Do you see a key here. Speaking in love, edifying in love. Love one another. What does the church never have enough of? Love for the brethren.
II. John 3: 16 God showed his love. Let us show our love.
16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
A. 1 John 5: 1 - 5 We must learn to love as God loves.
1 Whosoever believeth that Jesus is the Christ is born of God: and every one that loveth him that begat loveth him also that is begotten of him, By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God, and keep his commandments. For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous. For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith.
5 Who is he that overcometh the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God?
1. 1 Cor. 16: 13 - 18 If we love God we must love one another.
13 Watch ye, stand fast in the faith, quit you like men, be strong. Let all your things be done with charity. I beseech you, brethren, (ye know the house of Stephanas, that it is the firstfruits of Achaia, and that they have addicted themselves to the ministry of the saints,) That ye submit yourselves unto such, and to every one that helpeth with us, and laboureth. I am glad of the coming of Stephanas and Fortunatus and Achaicus: for that which was lacking on your part they have supplied.
18 For they have refreshed my spirit and yours: therefore acknowledge ye them that are such.
2. Rom. 12: 4 - 5 Sharing each others lives.
4 For as we have many members in one body, and all members have not the same office:
5 So we, being many, are one body in Christ, and every one members one of another.
B. Luke 19: 10 Jesus purpose showed love.
10 For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost.
1. Acts 8: 4 The early church showed its love.
4 ¶ Therefore they that were scattered abroad went every where preaching the word.
Showing love by sharing Jesus Christ with our friends.
2. 2 Cor. 4: 13 Paul says we believe and speak.
13 We having the same spirit of faith, according as it is written, I believed, and therefore have I spoken; we also believe, and therefore speak;
If we truly believe in Jesus Christ will we not tell others?
3. Acts 2: 46 - 47 We will be renewed.
46 And they, continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, did eat their meat with gladness and singleness of heart, {from...: or, at home}
47 Praising God, and having favour with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved.
Were they excited? Yes. Praising God daily.
III. Acts 20: 28 Make a Greater Commitment to the Lord’s church.
Christ gave Himself on the cross. What are we really giving Him,
28 Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood.
Elders have to take the feeding of the congregation seriously. It is a great responsibility.
A. Eph. 5: 25 He loved His church.
25 Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it;
If a husband loves his wife this way would she not be the happiest wife in the world? He would not neglect her, pressure her, aggravate her, humiliate her, or embarrass her. He would love her as his own body. That is what the scripture says.
1. Rom. 12: 1 How much do we love Him?
1 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.
2. 1 Cor. 4: 1 - 2 Are you faithful?
1 Let a man so account of us, as of the ministers of Christ, and stewards of the mysteries of God.
2 Moreover it is required in stewards, that a man be found faithful.
3. Matt. 6: 33 Is he now First in our life.
33 But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.
4. Luke 22: 41 - 42 Are we doing the Fathers will?
41 And he was withdrawn from them about a stone's cast, and kneeled down, and prayed,
42 Saying, Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done.
B. 1 Cor. 6: 19 – 20 Let us teach brethren that we all might grow.
19 What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?
20 For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's.
When we stop thinking in terms of “my time”, “my money”, “my church”, then are we going to grow and make the congregation better. I am the Lord’s servant. How I use the Lord’s time and how I spend the Lord’s money, this creates the whole picture in this life. We need to look at the whole picture.
1. Eph. 3: 8 Paul, who calls himself least of all saints, was to preach the unsearchable riches of Christ.
8 Unto me, who am less than the least of all saints, is this grace given, that I should preach among the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ;
2. Rom. 12: 1 We can only receive these riches if I be in Christ and become a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God.
Ro 12:1 ¶ I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.
Paul writing to brethren says it is still only by the mercy of God that we can even present our selves unto him. Then it is our reasonable service. Reasonable, not outstanding, not exceptional, not tremendous, but reasonable. Not first place, not second place, not even honorable mention, but reasonable.
3. Matt. 6: 19 – 21 Willing to lay down my early treasures.
19 ¶ Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal:
20 But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: 21 For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.
I think we want to be better Christians. We want to grow and help others to grow in Christ. We want more good works done, more souls reached, more people helped. Then we will have to be willing to pay the price. Willing to develop a stronger faith, a greater love, and a greater commitment. It is a life long accomplishment, but we must work on it now. Then we will become better Christians, better servants, better solders in Christ army, better husbands , wives, young people, parents, grandparents and what ever else we become in Christ Jesus. Are you growing? I know some are. I see it in your lives. I hear it in your conversations, questions, request, suggestions for the work of this congregation. Don’t be discouraged because we can’t do every good work we would like to or even needs to be done. Don’t sell your self short. There may be things you can do that your not. Keep growing. To other I asked, are you in Christ tonight? That is the first thing you must do. Are you in Christ, but think you are getting no where in your growth? Maybe your not being honest with yourself. You must put Christ first. Do you need to come back to Christ? Do you need to be baptized? Jesus is waiting on you. Will you come?

THE PICTURE OF THE VIRTUOUS CHURCH
"THE PICTURE OF THE VIRTUOUS CHURCH"
Proverbs 31
Intro:
At FhU, there is a running joke which says that many of the young women who attend Freed are there to obtain their “MRS Degree.” The truth is, most of the students at FHU are looking for Mr. or Mrs. Right. They want to find that special someone who will help them to grow as a person and as a child of God. One of the most commonly quoted chapters dealing with the selection of a good wife is Proverbs 31. There we find the words of a mother to her son. Directions and instructions on what it si that he should look for in a worthy mate.
As much as I believe that both men and women should read and take seriously the advice found in Proverbs 31, I think there is a message which we might miss out on in terms of the church if we are not careful. In these 31 verses which conclude the amazing sayings of Proverbs, we find a picture of the virtuous church.
Tonight, for just a few moments, we want to consider the portrait shown here. I pray that you will listen to the three things that the church must do if we are to be both virtuous and prosperous for the Lord.
I THE CHURCH SHOULD BE STRONG (Prov 31: 13-17)
1. The simple truth of the matter is if we don’t work, then we cannot gain strength.
A. Think about those times in life when you were sick, and unable to move around.
B. During that time, you experienced what is known as Atrophy.
C. Atrophy can be caused by either sickness, or a lack of exercise.
D. If we as the church hope to avoid atrophy, then we need to make sure that we are working for the good of the Lord!
2. What must we do if we are to become stronger?
A. Prov 31: 13 we mustn't be afraid of getting our hands dirty!
B. Prov 31: 14-15 we should seek to meet the needs of both those inside the church, that is to say our families, as well as those outside of the church!
C. Prov 31: 16 we must make certain that we are looking to build upon the results of our labor!
D. Prov 31: 17 we must make sure that we are prepared for action at all times!
II THE CHURCH SHOULD BE SUPPORTIVE (Prov 31: 23-27)
1. First, we must be supportive of Christ, and the agenda which he has left for us to do.
A. Eph 5: 23-24 we must support him by becoming submissive to his authority!
B. Eph 5: 30 we must also support him by honoring the monogamous relationship which we as the church enjoy with him today!
C. As with husbands and wives here on earth, we submit willingly because there is no danger of Christ leading you into harm!
D. We support Christ, the husband of the church, by yielding to him, obeying him, and following his example!
2. We should also be supportive to the body of Christ, by which we mean our brothers and sisters.
A. Pro 31: 23-24 we are supportive by not bringing shame to the church.
B. Pro 31: 25-27 we are supportive by serving one another.
C. Pro 31: 28-31 we are supportive by setting a good example for all to follow.
III THE CHURCH SHOULD BE SPIRITUAL (Prov 31: 2)
1. The image found in verse 2 is particularly powerful in light of Christ sacrifice on our behalf.
A. Prov 31: 2 "What, my son? And what, son of my womb? And what son of my vowels?"
B. Notice the way in which the kings mother claims him as her own.
C. She leaves no doubt as to how she feels about her son, and in so doing, she provides him with those wonderful guidelines by which he can live his life.
D. I find it interesting that before the author of Proverbs spoke about strength, or support, he spoke about the need for spiritual virtue.
2. There is a great lesson for you and I as the church today.
A. 1Pet 5: 8 we should beware of Satan, who can destroy more souls than any woman in history.
B. Ro 14: 13 we should beware of the stumbling blocks, which we might place in the path of those who are watching us!
C. Mt 9: 12 we should beware to reach out with the word of the Lord to those in need!
D. Prov 31: 10 let it be said, that that the church which meets here at Northjackson, is greater than any number of rubies!

GIVING THANKS ALWAYS
GIVING THANKS ALWAYS
I ROMANS 7: 25 – 8: 6 GTA FOR THE POWER OVER SIN AND DEATH
25 I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with the mind I myself serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin.
1 There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death. For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh: That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit.
6 For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. What a gift.
In Christ Jesus we are to be spiritual minded, we have eternal life and peace.
A. ROMANS 6: 3 – 7 In Christ we are dead to sin.
3 Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection: Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.
7 For he that is dead is freed from sin.
We should be thankful if we are like Christ. Are we?
B. Colossians 2: 10 – 14 We are complete in Christ Jesus.
10 And ye are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and power: In whom also ye are circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, in putting off the body of the sins of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ: Buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead. And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath he quickened together with him, having forgiven you all trespasses;
14 Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross;
In what else can we be complete? Are you thankful to God that in baptism we are forgiven for our past sins?
C. 1 Corinthians 15: 57 – 58 Christ has given us victory over death.
Not physical death but spiritual death.
57 But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.
58 Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord.
Victory is the christ+------------ians if we remain Stedfast, unmovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord. Not steadfast in your earthly job, not unmovable from your couch, or abounding in the works of the world, but in the work of the Lord. Can I have a job? Most certainly. If one does not work they should not eat.
Can I not set on my couch? Sure even Christ walked on the sea shore and cooked fish. Can I not do things in the world? Yes, if they are righteous in God’s sight. The point is that true victory is in Christ not the world. Do we give thanks to Christ that has given us that victory? Do we put him first?
II. Ephesians 5: 20 – 21 GTA for our faith and submitting unto God.
20 Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ;
21 Submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God.
A. How do we submit our selves to God?
1. By giving thanks to God.
+
2. When do we give thanks? Always.
3. What do we give thanks for? All things.
4. How do we give thanks? In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.
B. Romans 1: 8 Giving thanks for our faith.
8 First, I thank my God through Jesus Christ for you all, that your faith is spoken of throughout the whole world.
Being thankful for our faith and the faith of others.
1. 2 Timothy 2: 15 Thanking God for the word of truth, the Bible.
15 Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.
God provided the word to study.
2. John 14: 6 – 7 Thanking God for the way.
6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
7 If ye had known me, ye should have known my Father also: and from henceforth ye know him, and have seen him.
God gave us Jesus Christ for whom we must be thankful.
3. 1 Corinthians 12: 12 – 14 Thanking God always for His church.
12 For as the body is one, and hath many members, and all the members of that one body, being many, are one body: so also is Christ. For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit.
14 For the body is not one member, but many.
We should thank God that we can be baptized into Christ for the forgiveness of our sins knowing Christ adds us unto his church and we are one with Christ.
4. Matthew 11: 28 – 30 Thanking God for rest.
28 Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.
30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.
Thanking God that we can come unto him and find eternal rest.
III. Revelation 7: 11 – 12 Giving Thanks and Glory to God.
11 And all the angels stood round about the throne, and about the elders and the four beasts, and fell before the throne on their faces, and worshipped God,
12 Saying, Amen: Blessing, and glory, and wisdom, and thanksgiving, and honour, and power, and might, be unto our God for ever and ever. Amen.
How are we honoring God in our life.
A. Colossians 3: 17 Doing good in Jesus name.
17 And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.
B. Colossians 1: 12 – 17 Telling others of the redemption that is in Christ Jesus.
12 Giving thanks unto the Father, which hath made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light: Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son: In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins: Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature: For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him:
17 And he is before all things, and by him all things consist.
Is Christ before all things in your life? Are you thankful for all that God has given you? Do you use what you have to the glory of God? If not why?
God gave his only son for you. His desire is that we will obey him and live for him, telling others about him. How thankful are you? Thankful enough to serve the Lord? Do you need to come to Jesus tonight? Will you come as we stand and sing?

14 Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross;
20 Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ;
A 100% COMMITMENT
A 100% COMMITMENT
MATTHEW 6: 33
Intro:
I would like to begin this lesson with a challenge to each of you. If you are to experience any benefit from our study today, then there are two things which you will need to do. First, you must agree to examine yourself, and put other people out of your mind. I have designed this lesson for each of us, not just a select number. Second, I want you to commit to listen with both your heart and mind, and not try to hold some internal debate with me. In other words, I want you to listen to what I have to say without trying to come up with excuses. With that being said, I want to invite you to join me and let’s consider the idea of making a 100% commitment to God.
If we could take a look at the Church as a whole, we would find something very troubling. We would discover that our numbers are dwindling away a little at the time. At one time, we were the quickest growing religion in the U.S. However, recently we have fallen to the twelfth position on that list. This tells me two things. First, we are losing our current members. Secondly however, we are no longer reaching out and bringing new souls to Christ.
The explanation for this is simple to say, but difficult to hear. Our problem is that we are not committed as we should be. We have lost sight of what it is that we need to do. Our attendance is down, our contribution is down, and the enthusiasm for the work of the Lord is down.
This morning we want to rediscover a Biblical method for one committing him or herself to God. As we conduct this study, I want you to understand that we are speaking of 100% commitment, not 99.9, or 50, or 30% commitment. Instead, using the words of the savior found in Matthew 6: 33, we want to find out what it means when Jesus said, “SEEK YE FIRST.”
I. SEEKING IS OUR PURPOSE
1. Man has long searched for his purpose in life.
a. Just stop and consider all the many books which man has written attempting to explain why we are here.
b. Think about all the religions which have been founded based upon the idea that they will reveal the purpose of man’s existence.
c. However, the truth is that here Jesus tells us that our true purpose in life is to seek God and his will.
d. There are THREE things that you need to know about this seeking that we are commanded to do.
2. Seeking is A PERSONAL PURPOSE
A. Luke 15: 8-9 here we see this woman making up “HER” mind to seek after that which was important to her.
B. Also, it is worthy of noting that she made a personal decision to share that which she had sought.
3. Seeking is also a prepared purpose.
A. 2Timothy 3: 16-17 God gave, or prepared, the scriptures for our seeking.
B. Ezra 7: 10 that which we seek is prepared, we must likewise make certain that we are prepared to seek.
C. Deut 4: 29 to seek effectively, make sure that you prepare the proper attitude.
4. Seeking is a profitable purpose.
A. Matthew 7: 7-11 when we seek, we find: when we knock, the door is opened.
B. In the results oriented society in which we live, it is rather amazing that more people don’t seek God, because when you go looking for him, you’ll find that he isn’t that hard to locate.
II. YE ARE THE PEOPLE
1. I want to encourage you to keep this verse in context.
A. Matthew 6: 25-31 Christ is specifically speaking to those who believe that by their worry, they can provide for themselves.
B. Matthew 6: 32 however Christ points out that no amount of worry on our part will supersede the ability of God to provide for his children.
C. Instead, Christ uses the word “YE” to illustrate two concepts.
2. First, ye are the one who must establish a personal relationship with God.
A. 2Corinthians 5: 10 we want a personal relationship because we have a personal stake in the outcome.
B. This means that you and you alone, can make the decision to follow God as you should.
3. Secondly, ye are the one whom God wants to possess.
A. 1Peter 2: 9 God wants you, every ounce of you!
B. God wants to possess you, but he leaves the choice up to you.
III. FIRST IS OUR PRIORITIES
1. Allow me to say this as plain as I can: “Seeking God first is to be the First thing in your life.”
A. Luke 18: 22 you must seek him first over your job and the pursuit of money.
B. Matthew 19: 29 you must seek him first over friends, girlfriends, boyfriends, and all other associates.
C. Luke 14: 26 you must even seek Christ over your mother and father, husband and wife, children and grandchildren.
D. In other words, first means first!
2. How do we make seeking God our number 1 priority?
A. Philippians 2: 5 we accomplish this goal by having the mind of Christ.
B. Matthew 26: 39 Christ’s attitude was very simple: “Nevertheless, not as I will, but as thou wilt.”
3. Also, we put God first when we refuse to compromise.
A. 1John 2: 15-17 the scriptures make it very clear to us that we are not to “Love the world.”
B. James 4: 4 when we love the world, and the things there in, above all else, we establish ourselves as enemies with God.

BREAKING DOWN THE BEGINNING
“BREAKING DOWN THE BEGINNING”
(GENESIS 1: 1)
Intro:
"It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch
of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair ..." (A Tale Of Two Cities, Charles Dickens.)
"Call me Ishmael." (Moby Dick, Herman Melville)
"It is a truth universally acknowledged that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife." (Pride and Prejudice, Jane Austen)
“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” (Holy Bible, God)
Each of these opening lines has been taken from well-known works of literature. They have each had a profound effect on those who have read them. Each of these books is considered to be some of the best works of the written word.
However, there is at least one of them that are different from all the rest. One of these opening lines does something that the others simply cannot do. In the first three, “A Tale of Two Cities”, Moby Dick”, and “Pride and Prejudice”: you read the opening line and it offers no insight as to the text which is to follow. In the case of Genesis 1: 1 however, we are told all we need to know about that which follows these beautiful and amazing words. In point of fact, if we cannot believe these first words, then there is really no reason to read the remainder of the book.
Today, I want us to, “BREAK DOWN THE BEGINNING.” Brethren, if we do not understand where we come from, where our faith was founded, then how can we expect to know where we are going, and where that faith will lead us. For the next few moments, I want to help you to see the fount of knowledge which is contained in the opening line, of the greatest book ever written.
I. “IN THE BEGINNING”
1. There are so many in our world who believe that life is nothing more than coincidence.
A. There are those philosophers who say that life, including its creation, are nothing more than coincidence, and are without meaning.
B. “The short answer is we don't really know how life originated on this planet.” (Paleontologist Andrew Knoll, a professor of biology at Harvard and author of Life on a Young Planet.)
C. There you have it. We don’t know how we came to be, but we know that it had to have been by some biological coincidence.
2. However, for the true believer, there is something found in these first three words which should reinforce our belief that life has both a cause and a creator!
A. Throughout scripture, we see evidence of the fact that from the, “BEGINNING”, God has had his creation in mind.
B. Gen 17: 16 from the beginning, God knew Isaac, and the blessing he would be!
C. Gen 15: 13 from the beginning, God knew the nation of Israel, and the problems they would in counter!
D. Jer 1: 5 from the beginning God knew Jeremiah, and the people he would touch!
E. Jn 1: 1 from the beginning God knew his son, and the sacrifice he would make!
3. In this same way, God has known you and I from before time began, and more importantly, he has always known what we would need!
A. Gen 3: 15 he knew we would need salvation, and he has provided!
B. Jn 1: 1-3 it is indeed a wonderful thing to know that we have been on God’s mind, and in his heart, from before we drew breath!
II. “GOD CREATED”
1. When I read the words, “God created”, there is something strange that comes to my mind.
A. I can recall Christmas’s past, when I opened gift on top of gift, but never once did I stop to either read the cards or consider who it was that gave me the gift.
B. I simply ripped in, and then began looking for the next gift.
2. When speaking about the creation of all things, I think we are guilty of that same child-like lack of gratitude.
A. Each day we rise, see the sun or rain, and we think nothing of it.
B. Each day we rise, see our spouse and kids, and think nothing of it.
C. Each day, we rise, walk through our lovely houses, and we think nothing of it.
D. Each day, we rise, talk to God in prayer, secure in the knowledge of our salvation, and yet we think nothing of it.
3. Brethren, it is time for us to recognize the valuable lesson which we are given in Genesis 1: 1!
A. That lesson is that everything we have, everything we own, everything that we see around us was given to us by God!
B. Gen 1: 14-18 that sun which we take for granted was created for us by God himself!
C. PSA 127: 5 those spouses, kids, and loved ones whom we take for granted were gifts to us by God himself!
D. Jn 3: 16 finally, and most importantly, that salvation which we take for granted is indeed a gift from God in Heaven above!
E. James 1: 17 everything good in your life is a direct result of this first verse of scripture!
III. “THE HEAVENS AND THE EARTH”
1. In this section, as we are told what it was that he began to create, we see two blessings which he gave us right off the bat.
A. A place to “WORK.”
B. A place to “WANT.”
2. Taking them in reverse order from that which they are listed, let us first consider the place we are to “WORK.”
A. As I have said countless times, there is a very specific reason that we are here.
B. Jn 6: 38 our mission is to fulfill the will of God!
C. Mt 9: 37 the message from Gen 1: 1 is the same as the message from Mt 9: 37 and that is that there is work to be done, and the field has been given to us!
3. However, not only did he give us a place to work, but he also provided a place to “WANT.”
1. The wonderful thing about the God we serve is that he offers constant motivation to look ever onward to a better day.
B. Rev 21: 2 he gives us a beautiful image, of a beautiful place, in a peaceful beautiful time to look forward to!
C. That is what we want, and that is what he has given us to look ever onward toward.
D. as Matthew Henry said, when speaking of Gen 1: 1, it, “reminds us of our duty as Christians, always to keep heaven in our eye, and the earth under our feet.”
(GENESIS 1: 1)

WHAT I SHOULD HAVE SAID
"WHAT I SHOULD HAVE SAID"
Intro:
For those of you who might not have heard about my experiences this past weekend, let me say that a partial bowel obstruction isn't near as fun as it sounds. If you didn't know, I was admitted into the hospital last Saturday morning with this less than desirable condition. Over this past week, I have managed to find a since of humor in regards to everything that took place. However, at the time, there wasn't anything worth laughing about. In point of fact, I was scared out of my mind. I didn't know what was going on, and with my family history, I could only imagine the possibilities.
As I lay in the emergency room early Saturday morning, I started thinking. I actually found myself wondering if I was going to make it. Yes, I know how melodramatic that sounds, but that's how sick I was at the time. So, there I was, in that grim frame of mind, when I looked over at Laney. There she sat, reading a book, and occasionally wiping my face with a cool rag. As I lay there, I began to think about all the times that I had let her down, or said something in anger, or acted in a way that I shouldn't have done, and suddenly it was too much. I just couldn't allow something to happen without letting her know how much I loved her. So, I looked at her and said, "I want you to know, that no matter what happens, I love you and Katie more than I can say." It felt so good to be able to say that, and then know that she and Katie would always know how I felt.
In that moment, I was fully aware of the brevity of life. I suddenly understood that I was 100% mortal, and that this life doesn't go on forever. The only thing I wanted to do was say what needed saying before it was too late. I wonder how many people today have things, which they need to say; yet they hesitate to do so. I wonder, how many people have things, which they need to say to God, but yet they hesitate to say them.
This morning, I want to talk to you about the things that you might one day wish you would have said. I want to help you to see that this is the only chance we have. I want to wake us all to the reality of the ticking clock. Join me as we consider what I should have said.
I I SHOULD HAVE SAID YOU COME FIRST (Matt 19: 16-22)
1. IN the exchange between the rich young ruler and Christ, we see a man who almost had it right, but mist the mark by that much.
A. Mt 19: 16 he came asking for the secret to finding eternal life.
B. Mt 19: 17-19 without hesitation, Christ answered his question, and told him what he must do.
C. Mt 19: 20-22 the problem was that he couldn't commit to put the kingdom of God before all else in his life.
2. First, let's think of this in terms of what we should say to those we will leave behind after our death.
A. So many men, and women, put so many other things before their families.
B. Sports, shopping, housework, work, outdoor activities, friends and so much more.
C. Eph 5: 22-25 the point we so often miss, is that our families must come before jobs or activity or anything other than God.
D. Do you really want to leave this world with your spouse or children thinking that your work was more important than them to you?
3. However, we also need to understand the necessity of putting God first in all things!
A. Jer 1: 5 the truth of the matter is that God has put us above everything. He loved us before we were even born!
B. Mt 19: 21 when Christ asked the young man to leave everything, and put his kingdom first, he was only asking the man to do that which he was already doing.
C. Mk 12: 30 make sure that before it's too late, let God be first in all things!
II I SHOULD HAVE SAID I'M SORRY (2Tim 4: 10)
1. The story of Demas has longed fascinated me.
A. Col 4: 14 the first mentioning of Demas is as a close friend of the apostle Paul.
B. Phile 1: 24 next he is called a fellow worker with Paul.
C. 2Tim 4: 10 the final passage concerning Demas is at the end of Paul's life, when we learn that Demas had returned to the world.
D. He is never spoken of again in scripture.
E. We never read of the apology of Demas, and his spiritual restoration.
2. Cast your mind back on all the times in which you hurt someone you loved, but because of pride or ego, you didn’t allow yourself to say sorry.
A. What would happen if you never had the chance?
B. The regret of such a decision has brought many a man to his knees.
C. Lk 15: 13-21 if an apology needs to be made, please make it before it is too late.
3. However, as important as it is to say sorry to those who we love here on earth, we need to make sure that we apologize to the one who we hurt the most.
A. Lk 16: 19-25 the rich ruler pictured here in this parable certainly wishes that he had taken time to apologize for the wrongs he had committed.
B. 2Pet 3: 10 take time to say sorry to the one whom we have most grievously offended.
III I SHOULD HAVE SAID I'D OBEY (Acts 24: 24-25)
1. There is an attitude which is seen in this passage which is all too familiar to us today.
A. Notice how he calls for Paul not as a man searching for answers, rather as a man who is simply curious.
B. Also, once he had heard what Paul had to say, he was so arrogant as to send him away until some later time, as though he were guaranteed that later time.
2. How many of us refuse the invitation time after time, acting as though we are promised more time.
3. Let me ask you, what better gift can you give to your loved ones or God in Heaven, than to know that you are a faithful child of the Lord above?
A. When you’re gone, let your family live with the knowledge that you lived for Christ!
B. While you are here on earth, open the door of your heart and show obedience to the word of the Lord,
